After clinching a historic Conservative general election victory, the party has kept the Rutland and Melton seat - with an increased majority.

Alicia Kearns polled 36,507 votes, 26,924 more than nearest challenger Labour's Andy Thomas.

She extended the healthy majority her predecessor Sir Alan Duncan had in 2017.

Shortly after being elected Mrs Kearns posted on Facebook: "Thank you to the people of Rutland and Melton for putting your trust in me and the Conservatives.

"It is the honour of my life to have the opportunity to serve you and be your voice in Parliament.

"Thank you to Sir Alan Duncan for his service to our communities and many enormous kindnesses."

A total of 58,505 ballots were cast in the Rutland and Melton seat, a turnout of 70.74 per cent, slightly down on two years ago.

Pre-election, Mrs Kearns said her local priorities included establishing new GP surgeries in Oakham and Melton and investing in local mental health provision and initiatives to tackle rural isolation, improving roads and local services and supporting farmers.
