Rutland County Council is supporting national efforts to combat scams and frauds that are linked to COVID-19.

The UK's National Trading Standards Scams Team is seeking to make people aware of coronavirus cons through its 'Friends Against Scams' campaign.

The campaign warns individuals and families to be wary of people offering to sell products or services that are somehow related to the pandemic. This could include:

Virus testing kits

Vaccines or cures

Overpriced or fake goods such as anti-bacterial products.

Shopping or medication collection services (a list of verified groups offering these services in Rutland can be found on the county council website)

Home cleaning services

Rutland County Council leader Oliver Hemsley said: "Sadly, there are groups and individuals who think nothing of exploiting other people and the current COVID-19 pandemic for their own material gain.

"Coronavirus frauds are now commonplace and it's important that we know what to look out for, so that we can protect ourselves and each other.

Coun Hemsley added: "The national Friends Against Scams campaign is a useful resource to help you do this and something that we, as a Council, are keep to support."
