Oakham Bus Station to close early following incidents of anti-social behaviour

Oakham Bus Station is to close two hours earlier every night from tomorrow (Sat) for the forseeable future after a spate of anti-social behaviour incidents.

Rutland County Council says the decision to close the town bus station at 5pm, instead of 7pm, is being introduced following four reports of 'unacceptable noise and inappropriate behaviour' in the last week - which included minor damage to a public toilet.

Anti-social behaviour and misuse of the facility has prevented passengers from using the waiting area in recent weeks.

A council spokesman told Oakham Nub News: "The police are aware of the situation and we are working with them to resolve the issues.

"Efforts are being made to identify those involved and discussions are ongoing as to how to bring about an acceptable resolution."

The council says the change to the bus station opening hours is temporary, but will stay in place until further notice.

There will be no change or disruption to bus times or services as a result.

Chris Traill, Strategic Director for Places at Rutland County Council, said: "The decision to temporarily alter the opening hours for Oakham Bus Station has not been taken lightly and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

"We're making this change with passengers in mind and the bus station will return to normal operating hours once issues like unacceptable noise and inappropriate behaviour have been resolved."
