Rutland electric bike scheme proving 'wheelie' successful

A new electric bike scheme launched by Rutland County Council has proven a big hit with residents, receiving more than 100 enquiries since its launch in June.

The scheme offers people the chance to try out an electric bike by hiring one for a month, for travelling to work, getting to school, shopping or just keeping fit.

The hire scheme has been such a hit to date that it is already running at full capacity with a sizeable waiting list.

Coun Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "Cycling provides an environmentally friendly alternative to car travel or public transport and is a great way to stay fit and active.

"This is a relatively small pilot project which supports the government's cycling and walking investment strategy, the aim of which is to make sustainable transport a natural choice for shorter journeys, and as part of longer journeys.

"Electric bikes are great for people who want or need a bit of extra assistance when cycling. We're really pleased with the interest that people have shown in the scheme and would encourage everyone to at least think about e-bikes as a green and sustainable way to get around."

An electric bike, also known as an e-bike, is pedal-powered but has an integrated electric motor, which can be used to assist the rider – making it easier to cover longer distances or cycle uphill.
