A sheep suffered a facial injury after being attacked by a dog at the weekend.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "We were called at around 9.46am on Sunday (6 Oct) to a report of a sheep having been injured by a dog in Whissendine.

"The incident is believed to have taken place the day before at 1pm.

"The sheep sustained a facial injury.

"Enquiries are being carried out into the circumstances of the incident."

Livestock worrying - where a dog attacks or chases livestock causing injury or suffering - is a criminal offence and comes under the Dogs (Prevention of Livestock) Act 1953.

A farmer is allowed to kill the dog if it's worrying their livestock.

Police advise to always keep your dog under control around other animals and, if you see a dog on the loose worrying animals, to call 101.
