Portakabins are being used at Uppingham Community College to teach students in following a serious fire.

The premises were ravaged by the blaze in late August, as previously reported by Nub News.

Now, the college on London Road has begun installing seven Portakabin buildings and is now seeking planning approval for their use, for up to a year.

The application to Rutland County Council says the temporary classrooms will offer 712.8m2 of space in total, with them sited in an overflow car park.

The application commented: "After the school has been damaged by fire, Portakabins have been installed to provide decant classrooms so that pupils can continue their education whilst remedial work takes place on site.

"The buildings are being located on an overflow carpark that is only used during evening events. One overflow carpark will remain.

"This application seeks temporary planning approval of 1 year, to coincide with the completion of the Remedial works needed because of the fire damage. The buildings may come off prior to this."

Assessing the benefits of the application, it concluded: "The Portakabin building has been chosen as a result of the flexible solution it provides.

"It will be installed quickly enabling Uppingham Community College to begin using the specifically fitted out building much more quickly than a traditional build, and it can easily be removed from site with little impact.

"The speed they can be installed means there will be minimal disruption to pupils and they can be removed easily once the fire damage is resolved."

Rutland County Council has yet to determine the application.
