The Gents Monthly Medal at Greetham Valley Golf Club produced a very tight result with 15 players playing to par or better - but the overall winner was Gary Brooks, by virtue of a countback calculation, over Paul Thwaites .

Gary (23hcp) scored nett 67 after a wobbly start in which he dropped ten shots to the card over the first five holes but, once he had found his rhythm, a birdie on the 9th meant that he had completed the last four holes (of the front half) in level par.

A further birdie on hole 12 kept the round looking tidy although the 16th caused problems. Paul (12) has been improving throughout the summer and his score of 67 included a host of pars and two birdies, but it was the double bogeys (three in all) which eventually cost him the top spot.

In bronze position Richard Price (16) totalled 68 and was in line for the top spot until a double bogey on the 16th condemned him to third. Richard was ultra consistent after an erratic first hole as he amassed nine pars in his round, including a par-par finish.

On Sunday, the Ladies played their Monthly Medal and Order-of-Merit competition and there was a clear winner as Izzy Haughton came home with a terrific score of 66 nett.

Izzy (10) was faultless as she completed the front nine in only two over gross and then even improved on this in the second half as she went one better, thanks to a birdie on the last.

With 13 pars in her round, Izzy was delighted with her performance. Lesley Young (19) was next in order as she completed her round in nett 71 and she was particularly pleased with her front nine which was completed in only six over gross.

The back half was more challenging to Lesley, holes 10 and 11 in particular, but she held her nerve to finish well for second place. Ellie Haughton (2) came third with 75 and although she holed out two birdies she was unable to challenge her younger sister over the full 18 holes.

In the Mid-Week Qualifier on Wednesday, Connor Mousley (23) had an excellent win (following on from his success in the Rover Cup at the end of April) when he scored 39 points with a steady round with points gained on all holes.

Connor took full advantage on three of the five holes where he had a two shot allowance by carding pars to boost his scoring and these, coupled with a further eight bogeys, moved him to the top of the tree.

Close behind was Chris Steele (3) who amassed a score of 38 with an impressively steady round in which a double bogey on the 7th was his only blemish. Three birdies along with a hatful of pars (12) confirmed his position as runner-up.

Rory Smith (4), a first team companion of Chris, also totalled 38 and although he avoided any score worse than a bogey his four finishing holes totalled one over gross compared to Chris who was at one under gross for the same holes.

The GVGC First Team hosted league leaders Belton Park on Saturday and struggled to match the experience of their opponents. Rory Smith and Darren Child were beaten along with Russ Aust and Joe Sargood in the first two matches. The final four games were all close going down the 17th or 18th holes but the home team were just unable to clinch any points.

The highlight was a half for Trevor Smith and Tom Caldicott who was having his first run out for the season. Chris Steele, Leon Wyche, Paul and Adam Clegg and Richard Wilson and Pete Dickinson all lost narrowly. Captain Richard said ‘the result was a bit harsh on us but this is why they are at the top.’

The team next travel to Sleaford needing some sort of result to keep them away from the relegation zone.

On Monday the Seniors played a qualifying Stableford on the Valley course and there were a number of high scores at the top of the field.

In third place Pete McCall (21) scored 40 points after a good start (with a second hole birdie) and was looking strong throughout the front half; the back nine, however, was a different story as he failed to score on the 12th and followed this up with two double bogeys on 14 and 15 although a par on the last was a sweet way to finish.

David Aldred (14) was very frustrated as a first half of 24 points (totalling one over gross at the turn) seemed to set him up for a winning score and his steady play continued on the back half until an aberration on the 17th meant he had to register a no-score on that hole to total 42 points overall.

The ultimate winner was Keith Smith (13), who seems to have have recovered from his extended holiday in Europe as he amassed 43 points; Keith was lucky to escape with one point on the 5th but, that apart, never scored worse than a bogey as he parred eleven holes and included a birdie for good measure on the 16th.

Isabella Condie was part of the Lincolnshire Girls 2nd Team who played Leicestershire & Rutland at Burghley Park GC and won 4-1. Isabella played a full part in the victory with a crushing 8 and 7 victory in her match. The team now go forward to defend the 2nd Team Salver at Trent Lock GC on Finals Day on 19th August.
