Local councils across the country are preparing to support the rollout of a government-funded tax rebate that is being issued in response to soaring energy prices.

It was announced at the beginning of February that the national energy regulator Ofgem is preparing to introduce a new price cap from the 1st of April 2022. The change will allow energy suppliers to charge households significantly more for each unit of energy they consume, adding up to £600 to the cost of annual energy bills.

In response to the price cap rise, the government has announcement a crisis support package, including a 'Council Tax Energy Rebate' and additional money for local Household Support Fund (HSF) grant schemes.

The Council Tax Energy Rebate will be given to the occupants of properties in Council Tax bands A-D, in form of a payment worth £150. The rebate will be made as a direct payment by local authorities from April 2022 onwards. The money will not be taken off Council Tax bills that are due to be issued in March 2022.

Rutland County Council is awaiting information from the government and will share details of exactly how the rebate be paid as soon as possible.

The Council is also reminding residents that other sources of financial support are also available locally for those who need it. Rutland County Council has been allocated more than £150k funding for the Household Support Fund, to support those struggling with food costs, energy and water bills and other essentials.
