An angling society is riding on the crest of a wave after an appeal on Oakham Nub News helped it hook a new rowing boat.

Oakham Angling Society needed to replace its five-year-old inflatable boat - consigned to the scrapheap after numerous punctures caused by jagged overhanging branches - with a new vessel.

And, just days after society club member Ian Wood's appeal for a cheap and cheerful rigid rowing boat was published, a prospective seller got in touch.

Ian said today (Tues): "Thanks to the article on Oakham Nub News someone from Lyndon got in contact about a rowing boat.

"It sounded like it was just what we were hoping for so I went to have a look, it was a good price...so we've bought it.

"I went to pick it up this afternoon and it even has a trailer.

"The boat needs a little work, but it's perfect for our needs and we'll soon have it shipshape."

Society members uses a boat to carry out maintenance on the course fishing club's Oakham Canal fishery they can't manage from the canal bank.

This ranges from cutting overhanging branches to clearing rubbish and weeds from the water as well as removing broken fishing tackle caught on trees to keep wildlife safe.
