Check your bin collection day and cut down on festive waste this Christmas.

People living in Rutland are being reminded to check whether their bin collection day will change over the festive season.

Over Christmas and New Year, some bin collection days in Rutland have to be changed as schedules are altered to take account of bank holidays.

Rutland County Council is reminding people to double check their collection days heading towards the end of December and into January, with some collections due to take place later than normal. These changes also apply to properties on the separate farms and lodges collection round.

The Christmas collection days will be as follows:

Thursday 23 December - No change

Friday 24 December - No change

Monday 27 December - Wednesday 29 December

Tuesday 28 December - Thursday 30 December

Wednesday 29 December - No change

Thursday 30 December - No change

Friday 31 December - No change

Friday 7 January - Saturday 8 January Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for the Environment at Rutland County Council, said: "Everyone's looking forward to a break over Christmas but we'll be working hard throughout festive period to collect your bins. Christmas is our busiest time of the year for waste and the only time when bank holidays have an impact on our normal collection schedule, so please check to see if your collection day has changed at all." Cllr Stephenson added: "This is also the time of year when we face disruption to bin collections due to severe winter weather, like snow and ice, as well as delays caused by the sheer volume of seasonal waste. If the bins along your street are missed for any reason, please leave them out and we will return to collect them as soon as we can." Rutland County Council is encouraging people to try and reduce the amount they throw away as waste over the busy Christmas period. On average, food waste makes up 50% of the material in Rutland's black household waste bins. This is costly for households and bad for the environment. Households in Rutland will get an extra blue bag for additional recycling over the Christmas period. Once full, residents are asked to place this bag next to their grey recycling bin on collection day. Collection crews cannot remove any other side waste.
