Rutland Climate Action (RCA) have voiced their support of a 240-hour vigil taking place outside parliament.

Yesterday, Wednesday 14 February, thousands of Christian protesters gathered outside parliament, launching a 10-day campaign for climate justice.

Protesters, who assembled by Carriage Gates will be "holding vigil, praying, and calling on the UK Government for bold climate action."

MPs have been invited to join protests, including Rutland and Melton's MP, Alicia Kearns.

A spokesperson from Rutland Climate Action claims to have highlighted the cause to Ms Kearns, adding: "Peaceful demonstrations are a great way to raise visibility for conservation and environmental issues. They can help send messages to decision makers and spread awareness to the public."

Having relaunched in November, RCA is a group of volunteers who are working together to combat climate change and its effects in Rutland. They are looking for new members who can help with local projects, such as raising awareness, fundraising, and tree planting. No experience or skills are required, just passion and commitment.

The local climate action group aims to:

  1. Build connections: One Rutland
  2. Engage with the whole community, raising awareness
  3. Educate and signpost to enable the community to make informed and beneficial choices
  4. Measure success by monitoring and evaluating actions taken
  5. Ensure that 'stakeholder' status is achieved: a united voice will provide evidence-based opinion on policy both at a local and a national government level
