Controversial Oakham traffic measures to be removed

By The Editor 7th Jan 2021

Temporary traffic measures applied to Oakham Market Place in July of last year are to be removed.

The introduction of a temporary one way system, together with changes to parking bays, was requested by Oakham Town Council and the independent community group 4Oakham.

The change was made in response to COVID-19, as part of efforts to support outdoor food retail and increase the size of pedestrian areas, as previously reported by Nub News.

However, the move was unpopular, with residents upset at the loss of parking spaces, and traffic barriers being unsightly, as also reported by Nub News.

Oakham Town Council and 4Oakham have submitted a further request to Rutland County Council for these temporary measures to be lifted.

As a result, two-way traffic flow will be reinstated in Oakham Market Place and normal parking arrangements restored on Monday 11 January.
