Coronavirus crisis: Oakham on a roll as centre of cricketing world

Oakham might be on a roll as the centre of the county's cricketing world.

But its long-term future looks dicey as it all stems from the coronavirus.

The entire county championship has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

This has led Oakham School sports coach and tutor and former county cricketer Patrick Latham and mate Wes Durston, another former county cricketer and school coach, to devise a way to settle matches on the roll of a dice.

Their results have no official status with the clubs themselves, but they are being hosted on the Cricket World website , with the pair producing results, stats and match reports for every match in the 2020 season.

Patrick, who has played for Somerset and Cambridgeshire, told Oakham Nub News: "We are running the entire county championship from Oakham."

He explained: "Wes and I produced a dice game book game book to introduce children to sports. Eleven sports can be played at home with the family or on your own with just one dice.

"We already had a relationship with Cricket World, so it was our suggestion when we heard county cricket was going to be affected. It's something we have been preparing for a few weeks now."

The 'games' have been going a week now, with the results then submitted to Cricket World, who then publish them on its website.

And though the dice games have no official status, Patrick and Wes, who once played for Derbyshire, say cricket clubs are showing interest in what the pair are doing.

Patrick continued: "As we go through the season, it will gather momentum."

Either way, he added the dice game is also a great way to introduce children to various sports.
