Coronavirus crisis: Oakham pupils hear of life on the hospital front line

By The Editor 12th May 2020

Students at Oakham School heard about life on the coronavirus front line from a former pupil.

Dr Navin Leanage gave an online presentation to members of the school's medical and biology societies about fighting the pandemic, working for the NHS.

The event, hosted by biology teacher Dr Andrew Nicoll, was attended virtually by 25 Form 5 and Form 6 pupils from Oakham and Harington Schools.

Dr Leanage is a trainee in emergency medicine but has been deployed to the Intensive Treatment Unit at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.

He discussed his career path with the students and also shared his thoughts and emotions on treating Covid patients in very pressurised circumstances.

Some of the many challenges include having to wear extensive PPE for many hours at a time, which can cause migraines and pressure sores, and working with the constant threat of infection from his ITU patients.

Dr Leanage paid tribute to his colleagues: "We are all in this together and keep each other positive when times are extremely tough."

His passion for medicine has not been diminished by his experience either.

"Despite the pressure, my team and I work well together, and I love my job." he added.

In addition to being a trainee in Emergency Medicine in the East Midlands Deanery, Dr Leanage is an honorary fellow at Leicester Medical School. He has also won awards for widening participation and staff-student relationship development.
