Coronavirus crisis: Otters Fine Foods re-opens to public with pop-up deli

Otters Fine Foods in Oakham has re-opened to the public with a pop-up deli.

Owner Leo Sugden told Oakham Nub News the store at 19 Mill Street had a 'soft' launch last week, before the official re-opening yesterday.

Customers will be served by popular staff member Sue Lundy who has a new counter at the front of the store.

Leo said: "We have pretty much everything we had in the shop- cheese, take-out coffee, cakes, savoury tarts, coleslaw, salads, smoked fish, deli meats, etc."

The service is helped by the new, larger premises the deli moved into late last year having bi-fold doors.

In recent weeks, Otter's Fine Foods has operated through a new website and a delivery service.

Leo said of yesterday's trade: "It was really good. People were very happy. But it still means we don't have anyone coming into the shop. It's a safe way of doing it."

It all adds to how the pandemic has affected this popular business, which has operated since 2011.

Leo added: "We moved into Mill Street at the end of November. We would do 300 covers in our cafe/restaurant and it's gone down to zero, but we are making it work."
