The re-opening of businesses in Oakham and Uppingham yesterday has been welcomed by Rutland Council leader Oliver Helmsley.

His comments follows Rutland County Council working with Oakham and Uppingham Town Councils on a new website Rutland Welcomes You.

The website aims to show what businesses are and aren't open, as well as give guidance on other facilities such as public toilets and parking.

Public toilets are available and parking on council sites remains free.

Other coronavirus-related advice can also be found, such as the safety measures in place.

Rutland Councty Council is promoting the website to help spread the message that it's high streets are re-opening.

Yesterday, many 'non-essential' shops were allowed to open for the first time since March.

Other changes are also planned to promote safety including a one-way system in Oakham.

Rutland Council leader Oliver Hemsley said today: "It's really encouraging to see more shops open for business.

"A lot of work has gone into making sure that shops and other non-essential businesses can reopen safely. We expect things to get busier as more and more people return to the high street.

"I would encourage everyone to shop local whenever they can – to boost retailers in both our market towns – and please remember follow social distancing guidelines."
