Do reduced winter green bin collections cause problems in Rutland?

Rutland County Council's bin collections will be disrupted over the Christmas period, with the green bin collections being much less frequent during December, January, and into February due to the reduced amount of garden waste being produced.

When will my green bins be collected?

Collections will cease from 16th December 2022 until 20th January 2023.

Collections will continue from 23rd January until 3rd February 2023, and will pause again for a fortnight, between 6th and 17th February.

However, not all Rutland residents think that the collection period should cease for so long over the festive period, particularly with nationwide and local authorities encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees.

A resident of Foxfield Way, just off the A606 Burley Park Way bypass, highlighted one issue caused by the reduced collections, explaining that many of the gardens on the fields roads are home to protected trees, which shed their leaves late into the winter: "This causes issues with dying grass and moss growth, and when the leaves get wet in the green bags, they are often too heavy to lift."

Do you agree, or do you think that the green bin collection is a good way for the local council to reduce costs?

From 20th February 2023, green bin collection will continue as normal, ready for the spring regrowth.

What can I put in my green bin?

Grass cuttings

Small twigs and branches

Hedge trimmings

Leaves

Weeds

Old plants and flowers - but NOT flows pots
