The top boss of Rutland County Council receives an annual salary of more than £150,000, documents have revealed.

Chief executive Mark Andrews is on £153,584 a year, according to the council's pay policy statement, which is due to be approved at full council this Thursday (March 26).

The salary is six times that of the local authority's lowest paid employees – who earn £24,796 a year.

Mr Andrews was appointed chief executive in 2020 and has been part of the council's strategic management team since 2015.

According to the report, the council's three highest earners after the chief executive are the strategic directors for resources, health and places – with each on a salary of £105,000.

The council's strategic director of law and governance is on £100,000 while the strategic director for children and families is on £95,000.

The council is required to formally approve its pay policy annually – however local authorities are yet to rule on annual pay rises for staff.

The National Joint Council, which represents rank and file council workers across the UK, is asking for a 10 per cent pay rise for 2026/27.

The body is also demanding a two-hour reduction in the working week and an increase of one day annual leave.

The Joint Negotiating Committee – which represents local authority chief executives – is asking for councils to match whatever pay rise is handed to their staff.

Last summer council workers received a 3.2% pay rise nationally.

The pay policy statement also reveals that the council pays pension contributions of 21.8% to staff who are members of the Local Government Pension Scheme.

The minimum employer pension contribution in the UK is 3% of earnings and the average employer contribution in the UK is around 4.5%.

In the private sector, contributions tend to range between 3% and 10%, while public sector employers average around 20%.

Councillors will also approve their own allowances for the coming year at the meeting.

Every councillor will receive a basic annual allowance of around £5,250 for the next financial year.

A new council leader will also be chosen after Cllr Gale Waller (Lib Dem) announced she was standing down last week.

Likely candidates are the current leader of Rutland's Lib Dem group Cllr Christine Wise; and the current acting council leader Cllr Andrew Johnson.
