East Midlands Railway (EMR) is seeking volunteers to work on projects to help transform a number of stations on its route, including Melton Mowbray.

EMR currently has 98 stations adopted and is hoping Fiskerton, Nottingham, Melton Mowbray and Elton Orston will be taken on soon.

The volunteers, called station adopters, will play a vital role in improving the surroundings of the station. From keeping an eye out for any unusual activity and reporting faults and issues to maintaining the gardens and ensuring the station is presentable, they make a huge difference to every single passenger.

EMR is calling for volunteers for the remaining stations that are not adopted as part of this year's National Volunteer's Week.

Kaye Robinson, Community Engagement Manager at East Midlands Railway, said: "Station adopters are a vital part of our railway and do amazing work to improve the station environment for our customers.

"We only have a few stations left that aren't adopted and it would be great if during National Volunteer's Week some interested people got in touch.

"So, if you're looking for a fun and engaging way to get involved with the community, make new friends, learn a new skill, or take pride in your local station, then station adoption could be for you."

Station adoption is part of the community rail movement, a growing grassroots initiative spanning Britain. It comprises community rail partnerships, working along railway lines or across regions, as well as station adoption groups and other local organisations, all aiming to connect communities with their railways.

Anyone interested in becoming a station adopter can apply via EMR's website.
