Exciting line up of activities at Oakham Castle this summer

Rutland County Council is encouraging residents to visit Oakham Castle, as the venue continues is summer season of events and activities.

This summer, the council-run castle has already played host to a marbling paper workshop, bug hotel workshop and seen the launch of the Castle Meadow Quiz.

Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, says: "There has already been a great reaction from residents to the activities we've had so far this summer at Oakham Castle and we're really looking forward to many more people enjoying the fantastic events we've got coming up.

"If you're looking for something to during the holidays, we encourage you to come along and enjoy the events taking place at this wonderful community venue."

Here's a full list of events, including dates, prices and age guidance:

Throughout the Summer Holidays – Mini-Trail

Time: all day

Booking: drop-in event, no booking necessary. £1 per person plus a £1 deposit for a magnifying glass.

The ever-popular Mini-Trail returns to Oakham Castle. Pick up a magnifying glass and locate the tiny scrolls left by the castle bunnies. Solve riddles as you explore the castle and grounds before receiving a small prize for completing the trail.

Thursday, 22 August – Willow Hurdle Making

Time: all day

Booking: free event, but booking is required. To reserve a place, email [email protected]

Learn the traditional skill of willow hurdle fence making then help staff to decorate the castle grounds with your creation. Each fence takes around two hours to complete. Visitors can stay for a morning, afternoon or all day.

Sunday, 25 August – Have-a-Go Archery

Time: all day

Booking: £3 for five arrows

Guidance: suitable for ages 7 and up

Red Fox Archery return to Oakham Castle to teach the art of bow and arrow shooting to beginners and novices alike.

Friday, 30 August – Outdoor Cinema: A Star Is Born

Time: doors open at 7pm, film to start at nightfall

Booking: ticket prices vary depending on seating options, book online at: http://tiny.cc/AStar

Guidance: this film is rated 15

Oakham Castle teams up with travelling boutique cinema Star & Mouse for a fantastic pop-up outdoor cinema event in the castle grounds. Starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, the critically-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film tells the story of a musician helping a young singer find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Saturday, 31 August – Outdoor Cinema: Bohemian Rhapsody

Time: gates open at 6:30, film to start at nightfall

Guidance: this film is rated 12A

Oakham Castle teams up with travelling boutique cinema Star & Mouse to deliver the ultimate pop-up outdoor cinema experience. Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of the legendary rock band Queen and charismatic frontman Freddie Mercury, leading up to the band's famous performance at Live Aid in 1985.

Since its release at the back end of last year, Bohemian Rhapsody has gone on to set a box office record for the highest-grossing biographical film of all time, while the film's star Rami Malek picked up a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Mercury.

Both films will be shown on a 30-foot Airscreen and the events will also feature live music and giant garden games. Guests are advised to bring a blanket to keep warm. These are dog-friendly events so four-legged friends are welcome. Note picnics are not permitted, but drinks and tapas will be available.
