Drivers and pedestrians in Oakham should be aware that heavy rain over the past few days has caused a flood on Station Road, outside St Joseph's Catholic Church today, Thursday the 17th of November 2022.

The water is particularly deep where Station Road is joined by Kilburn Road.

Drivers should be wary not to drive through the flood too fast, for risk of flooding their car or splashing pedestrians.

Just six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars. This depth can cause loss of control or possible stalling as water is sucked into the exhaust or washes into the air intake.

There are also legal and financial consequences for driving through puddles and splashing pedestrians. Despite vagueness, law experts say that motorists could face a fine of up to £5,000.

According to National Highways, during heavy rain, there's a risk that your vehicle can start aquaplaning, which can cause a significant loss of driving control.

Take care in the damp weather and be sure to use your judgement and slow down where necessary.

There are plenty of places that you can go to stay warm and dry this winter.

Rutland Libraries are offering 'Warm Hubs', which you can find out about here.

Alternatively, check out our What's On page to find a range of indoor and outdoor events going on in the local area.
