The world-famous Flying Scotsman will be steaming through Oakham later this month.

The iconic steam locomotive no 60103 is passing through Rutland as part of The Railway Touring Company's The Yorkshireman railtour from London Ealing Broadway to York on Saturday, 29 June.

The train will be stopping at Kettering to pick up passengers and take on water before heading off at about 9.47am, passing through Corby Station, climbing to Harringworth Viaduct, climbing again to Wing Tunnel before the downhill journey to Manton Junction and through Oakham before stopping at Melton Mowbray at about 10.30am to pick up more passengers.

The train is expected to pass through Oakham at about 10.20am.

Rail enthusiasts keen to view and take photos of the Flying Scotsman on its journey are urged to heed British Transport Police's (BTP) and Network Rail's warnings about the dangers of edging too close to the tracks.

BTP has issued the following advice:

  • Use safe vantage points to view and take pictures of the train
  • Stay clear of the line
  • Do not risk your safety and that of other by trespassing on the tracks
  • Respect landowners by obtaining permission before going on to any private land

A Network Rail spokesman added: "Unfortunately, we have experienced serious incidents of illegal trespass on the railway when Flying Scotsman has been touring, putting lives at risk and causing delays for tens of thousands of passengers.

"We will be working closer than ever with British Transport Police and train operating companies to make sure everyone can safely enjoy the experience and the joy this iconic piece of British engineering brings."
