Rutland Community First Responders have released a list of warning signs to help the Oakham and Rutland residents spot heatstroke before it becomes fatal.

Heatstroke is the most serious form of heat injury and happens if your body reaches to 40 degrees F or 104 degrees C or more for a prolonged period.

It is usually the result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures.

The signs to look out for are:

  • not sweating despite feeling hot
  • shortness of breath
  • feeling unwell after 30 minutes of being in a cool space
  • feeling unwell after cooling down and drinking plenty of water
  • confusion
  • a fit of seizure
  • loss of consciousness

Earlier warning signs letting you know that you need to get into the shade will be skin redness, prickly heat, and even headaches.

Oakham Town Council have also warned dog owners to keep their pets inside, reduce walks, and to keep them hydrated.

Enjoy the sun, but make sure you have water, sun cream, and a hat with you if you are going out this week or weekend!
