A coroner has delivered his verdict into the death of Rutland teenager Sonny Joseph Ferry.

The 19-year-old from Ketton tragically died after he fell into the River Foss in York in the early hours of Saturday April 13 2019 and his body was recovered the following day.

The inquest took place just outside York earlier this week.

As Nub News has previously reported, Sonny was in the city working as a labourer and his parents Kate and Steve believe their son slipped and fell into the water after leaving a nightclub and becoming lost.

Police did not treat the incident as suspicious, but as Nub News previously reported, Sonny was one of five people to die in York's rivers in a three week period.

The Press newspaper in York has reported how Coroner Jonathan Leach said police had found no suspicious circumstances or evidence of third party involvement and said Sonny's death was accidental.

However, Sonny's mum Kate Ferry still believes someone else may have been involved.

The full story can be found here.

Since Sonny's death, Kate has been busy fundraising in memory of her son, launching the The Sunshine Campaign. The aim is to raise £45,000 to provide a brand new fully-equipped rescue boat - The Humber Destroyer 7m - for the volunteer-run York Rescue Boat charity.

To date, more than £32,000 has been raised. To donate, click the link here.
