A Choral Conductor and ex-Oakham School Pupil reunited for bonfire night concert

By Gill Guest 26th Oct 2022

Local Choral Conductor Charlie Penn encountered a bizarre coincidence this month upon reuniting with a former Oakham School Pupil while rehearsing for Brahms' Requiem in Lyddington.

After booking a London-based baritone to appear alongside the Harborough Singers for their forthcoming performance of Brahms' Requiem, he then discovered that his choice – a fine singer, composer and teacher by the name of Angus McPhee, was known to half the choir!

Not only that, but the concert was due to take place in Lyddington, in Rutland, an area it turned out the singer knew well. For, unbeknown to Charlie, Angus was an Old Oakhamian, a former pupil of Oakham School, and he had performed often in and around the area.

The performance in question, of Brahms' Requiem, takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday the 5th of November at St Andrew's Church, Lyddington. The Soprano soloist will be Felicity Hamilton and the Baritone, of course, Angus McPhee.

The Harborough Singers, conducted by Charlie Penn, will take centre stage and the piece will be accompanied in dramatic style by four hands   those of Andrew King and Oksana King on a single piano.

A glittering evening of music making, the concert promises to rival any pyrotechnics taking place outside that night.

Tickets are £15, available online or in person from the Old White Hart, Lyddington, or direct from Julia, who can be contacted via email [email protected] or phone 07761 729558.
