Military staff have been causing issues in the Oakham night time economy, according to a report by the county's safety partnership.

A recent report by the Safer Rutland Partnership says the body, which is made up of police, council and voluntary groups is working with the Royal Military police and pubs to tackle the problem.

It said: "To address issues related to the night time economy, we are working with the Royal Military Police and licensed venues to improve the behaviour of a small group of military personnel. We have scheduled meetings with local military representatives to ensure they are fully aware of and understand the impact of their behaviour. Notably, military law has a lower threshold for acceptable conduct." 

The Safer Rutland Partnership board meets in private, so details are scant, but partnership member county councillor Christine Wise briefly mentioned the issue briefly this morning (Sept 27) at the Leicestershire and Rutland Safer Communities Strategy Board meeting.

She said: "There was some concern raised about the military police becoming involved in misbehaviour in Oakham. I think that's just a very good example of partnership working – that the military police like to know about misbehaviour at a much lower level than you would normally involve the police and it was recognition of that, that led us to bring them into the situation."

The Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore, at which the second battalion of the Royal Anglian regiment are based, is in the area, but the report does not specifically say where the military personnel are from.

An army spokesperson: "Soldiers at all levels of the British Army are held to the highest standards. If any individual is believed to have failed to meet those standards, we will investigate, and will take appropriate action where necessary."
