New Rutland Council Leader has month to remember in May
From election success to a football frenzy, the new Leader of Rutland County Council had a busy month of celebrations.
May was a month to remember for Cllr Gale Waller. As leader of the Liberal Democrats, she saw 11 of her colleagues elected to the council at the Local Elections 2023 on May 4, where her party took 47 per cent of the votes cast.
Then Cllr Waller was elected the new leader of Rutland County Council by majority at the annual meeting of the council on 22 May.
Cllr Gale Waller said: "These occasions are always quite stressful, of course, and I am incredibly humbled to be elected as the Leader of this Council. I hope I can do the job justice." Read more from Cllr Waller here.
Finally, this weekend just gone, she was in attendance at Wembley Stadium as her beloved Luton Town Football Club were promoted to the Premier League for the very first time.
Cllr Waller, who was born in Luton, and has held a season ticket for the past 40 years, said: "I am a passionate Luton fan and season ticket holder, and have had my tickets for me and my family for Wembley as soon as they were made available. To get to the Premier League is a dream come true for a tiny little club like Luton who were a non-league side just a few years ago."
Cllr Waller will begin her tenure as Leader of Rutland County Council when the first cabinet meeting takes place on 6 June, and her first Premier League match with Luton when the 2023/24 season begins on 12 August.
