Local shop owners have shared their fears that their independent furniture and gift shop may not last past Christmas.

Stephen and Kelly Brant, owners of Peeky's Quirky Gifts, are a married duo who have been working hard to make their dream a reality in Oakham.

Peeky's Quirky Gifts opened on Oakham's South Street in January, and stocks a range of gifts, furniture and handmade items, made by Stephen and Kelly.

While those who use the shop have reported "friendly service, extremely good value and a diverse range of extraordinary and well made bits and bobs", the business owners have put out a plea to Rutland residents to shop local this Christmas as the business struggles to make its first anniversary.

Stephen and Kelly said: "It has been a difficult first summer for us in Oakham and we were hoping Christmas shoppers looking for gifts would help but it's looking increasingly likely we may last only until Christmas. It's been an experience and we at Peeky's quirky gifts have enjoyed ourselves here but with the dwindling numbers of shoppers everywhere we simply cannot continue."

They continued: "We appreciate feedback and would love to know how to attract more users, and look forward to welcoming new and established customers in store as Christmas approaches."

Now that Christmas in on the horizon, the duo are optimistic that the festive season will buy them time.

From stocking fillers, to show-stopping gifts, the South Street venue stocks a huge range of items across two storeys, with prices starting at £5.

The duo also sell a range of larger furniture and household items, as well as providing innovative storage solutions and outdoor furniture and goods that you can enjoy all year round.
