Oakham: Don't panic! There's plenty of petrol, as MP repeats call for drivers to buy fuel as normal

Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has again urged drivers not to panic buy petrol.

Her call to arms came as reports of Rutland filling stations selling out of fuel appeared on social media, whilst other drivers posted they were able to buy fuel.

The MP last night publicised a statement from the fuel industry, which said: "There is plenty of fuel at UK refineries and terminals, and as an industry we are working closely with the government to help ensure fuel is available to be delivered to stations across the country.

"As many cars are now holding more fuel than usual, we expect that demand will return to its normal levels in the coming days, easing pressures on fuel station forecourts. We would encourage everyone to buy fuel as they usually would."

"We remain enormously grateful to all forecourt staff and HGV drivers for working tirelessly to maintain supplies during this time."

Mrs Kearns commented in response: "As per my posts over the weekend, the issue is not fuel, but people mass buying far beyond what petrol stations expected to need to service our communities.

"Please do not "stock up" or panic buy. Your actions will harm others in our community. Like the carer who emailed me today unable to get petrol and who therefore couldn't get to work, leaving someone without a carer."

At the weekend, in addition to explaining how the UK had sufficient stocks of petrol, she also added that Germany and Poland also face a shortage of tanker drivers.
