Oakham in "state of panic" reports national media but festival goer invites residents for a 'cup of tea'
Oakham is reported to be in a "state of panic" according to national media.
The Sun newspaper this afternoon reported: "LOCALS have said they are "scared to leave their houses" as a mass event for travellers got underway this weekend."
The tabloid said Oakham residents have described the town as "in a state of panic" following the reports of "travellers drag racing on nearby roads and physically and verbally abusing shop staff."
Some 1500 people, The Sun continued, turned up to the "Light and Life" Christian festival at the Rutland Showground. Hundreds of caravans were also parked in nearby fields.
ITV reported how Rutland Showground had taken a booking for 30 people for the festival, which 'seemingly got out of hand.'
The BBC also reported the apology made by showground operators for the festival it described as a "Pentecostal Gypsy-led event."
The BBC also reported Leicestershire Police saying the event was "legally authorised" and would run until 25 June.
Their report continued: "Supt Adam Slonecki said officers would visit the site regularly to ensure it was Covid safe.
"One of the convention attendees, who wanted to stay anonymous, said it was "nice and peaceful on the field."
"We are inviting the locals to come down and have a look for themselves, listen to what it's all about and come have a cup of tea and a sandwich any time," he said.
