Sight Masters Opticians is the latest addition to Oakham High Street, and Oakham Nub News has got 'up close' with owner Kishan to find out more about the new business - and to give you the chance to enjoy deals in the new store.

Kishan, 31, is from Leicester and is a qualified Dispensing Optician and a member of the ABDO (Association of British Dispensing Opticians). 

However, he has always enjoyed spending time in Rutland, and has fond memories of the area from his childhood that ultimately encouraged him to open up his own business in the traditional market town. 

Kishan said: "My favourite times in Rutland have got to be those spent at Rutland Water. When I was at secondary school, we always used to take field trips where we rented bikes and cycled around the reservoir. We also had family BBQs there it was great fun – I understand why people are so passionate about the area."

And just like the Rutland residents, Kishan is also passionate: about quality, affordable eye care and educating about different lenses available which are exclusive to independent opticians. 

After working for major chains within the optical market, including Specsavers, Boots and Vision Express, as well as an independent Optician in Nottingham, he decided to set up his very own opticians in the heart of Oakham. 

As such, Sight Masters Opticians was born, and opened its doors in May this year.

Kishan said: "I would always get told that I am good at what I do by colleagues and many patients that I would see. This is what made me decide that I wanted to go to a community and open up my own independent optician to really make a difference. 

"I decided to open up my own business in Oakham as it is a very traditional town, full of a wonderful mix of people with a real community spirit. So, in May 2023, I finally opened up Sight Masters Opticians at 36 High Street." 

Kishan provides quality services, including a comprehensive eye test which is a minimum of 40 minutes with a free retinal, diverse type of Low Vision aids, as well as contact lenses.

He also stocks designer frames from brands such as Rip Curl, Penguin, Taylor Made of London, Sunday Somewhere, Wolf Eyewear, Joules, Dsquared2 and Kate Spade. 

On top of being dedicated to providing quality, stylish eyewear, Kishan is also enthusiastic about delivering strong and committed customer service.

He added: "I learnt over the years, the importance of having long term relationships with the patients that I have looked after. 

"Eye care is not just about doing an eye test and sending a patient home with glasses. It's about understanding the history of the patient and supporting their present needs so that they can enhance their everyday life. 

"We like to build a relationship with our patients so that they can feel comfortable and assured that we have a full understanding of their requirements." 

Kishan is keen to spread the word about his services, and invites resident to head in store for an informal chat and to find out about new advancements in lens technology and design offered at Sight Masters Opticians.

In the early stages of his new business, Kishan will be offering a range of deals to new and returning customers. 

These will include half price varifocals on your second pair purchased, and a "superb" anti-reflection coating called HYDRO+, which is normally £60 but when you purchase a frame over £125, the coating is reduced to a price of £20.

Kishan is already settling into life in Oakham, and has met and used the services of a range of local suppliers. 

He said: "I have explored a range of local businesses in the High Street, and I really like the team at Nelsons, the butchers. Kieran who runs the business is a real down to earth guy and he has his head screwed to what he wants to achieve in life."
