Prompted by a letter from local lady Ann Ellis, a conversation has been growing amongst the people of Oakham about the appearance and upkeep of our market town.

Ann argued that: "Oakham centre is in dire need of a facelift, or if that isn't affordable - a spring clean."

A retired Oakham business owner, Tricia Mulvany responded, adding: "I am aware that there are far more important things happening in the world today: but that doesn't mean we can't keep our area looking more welcoming."

Now Bronwyn Collier has joined the conversation, sharing her voice and opinion with her community.

Bronwyn said: "On browsing through Oakham Nub News this morning I came across your letter commenting on the sad appearance that Oakham has now become. I totally agree with all that you have commented on. It's not very often now that I venture down into the town centre (only when I have to) because it breaks my heart to see what it has become.

"On several occasions last year I took photos of the state of our streets and gutters... weeds, cigarette butts and general grot etc and reported it on fix my street. At that time we had some absolutely beautiful floral displays done by Oakham in Bloom... but oh dear, when you looked down at the dirty streets.....such a shame.  I even wrote to one of the councillors and put a suggestion forward to employ a person to manually sweep the streets. Melton and Stamford do just that.

"Oakham Town Centre should have had a facelift some years ago but with a few disagreements was put on hold. Will it ever get done now I ask myself."

Do you want to ensure that your voice gets heard?

Next week, on Tuesday the 17th of May 2022, the Annual Town Meeting will be held at Ron House, Long Row, Oakham. This meeting begins at 6pm. All residents are welcome, and will have the chance to share their opinion on many aspects of life in Oakham.

Alternatively, email [email protected] to share your opinion piece.

We look forward to hearing from you.
