A footbridge at Oakham railway station is to be repaired and refurbished.

Rutland Council has approved an application from Network Rail to carry out the works. including bridge strengthening.

As Nub News reported recently, the bridge is widely believed to date back to the 19th Century.

A report by council planning staff said: "The bridge is in a dilapidated state and the application seeks to refurbish and upgrade it in order to bring it up to current standards.

"This includes repair, partial replacement of elements, strengthening, cleaning and painting. It also includes the installation of solid panels between the handrails and decking."

During the planning processes, talks with a local resident and the council's Conservation Officer, the design of the planned repairs were amended to improve the appearance of the repairs. Open railings would be used up the stairs and solid panels.

Recommending approval, the report added: "The works in general are necessary in order for the bridge to remain in usable condition, and the refurbishments would not cause harm to historic significance of the structure or its setting."
