Oakham: Rutland business receives global recognition for quality wool

An Oakham company has received global recognition for the quality and eco-friendly nature of the wool it uses to make bedding.
Woolroom, based in Pillings Road, is the UK's leading wool bedding specialist and has announced it has received GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification for its Luxury Bedding and Arinta Bedlinen Ranges.
The company says a GOTS certification is recognised as the leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres worldwide – it also limits the use of toxic bleaches, dyes, and other chemical inputs during the production process of textiles.
With an ever-growing environmentally conscious society, Woolroom says it can benefit from having this certification by gaining trust from customers and build loyalty.
To carry the GOTS label of "organic," a textile must contain at least 95% certified organic fibres (Woolroom fibres are 100% organic). Additionally, no harmful chemicals can be used in production, and worker safety and worker rights issues are a top priority.
Woolroom Managing Director Chris Tattersall said, "It's easy to sleep green if you know where to look. There are a very few licensed bedding suppliers who are GOTS certified, so as a team, we are thrilled to have received this prestigious certification.
"GOTS distinguished and stringent criteria is known throughout the world, and achieving this status is yet another achievement in Woolroom's continued pursuit of clean, organic, and sustainable bedding."
Mr Tattersall is a proponent of improving the sleep environment with natural wool and is passionate about providing sustainable bedding products of the highest quality.
He continued: "As a consumer, we have an incredible amount of power with our purchase decisions. The GOTS brand assures Woolroom purchasers that we are part of the green movement, and care deeply about the environment and our farmers."
The company, which recently won a Queen's Award for Enterprise for International Trade, credits its success to the increased demand for sustainable bedding products, as the nation became more aware of the benefits a good night's sleep can have on someone's overall wellbeing with natural, organic bedding.
In achieving GOTS certification, Woolroom completed a number of extremely stringent examinations and inspections, including assessment of its processing and storage system, inspection of the chemical inputs (dyes and auxiliaries), inspection of the wastewater system, checks on social criteria, interviews with management, confidential interviews with workers, and many more.
