Oakham Town Council holding extraordinary meeting to discuss Town of Culture
By Grace Kennington 2nd Feb 2026
Oakham Town Council will be holding a special meeting to discuss submitting an application to become Town of Culture 2028.
The government announced the new Town of Culture competition, following the ongoing success of the City of Culture award.
Towns wanting to throw their hats in the ring have until 31 March to express interest in entering the competition. After that, the town will put together a bid outlining what the prize money will be used for within the town.
Small, medium and large towns that enter will all be judged by an independent pale, with one finalist of each size being selected.
After the three finalists are selected, one town will be chosen an overall winner, being awarded £3 million of funding towards the bid.
The two runner-ups will each receive £250,000 to deliver elements from their bid.
Applications for the UK Town of Culture will be judged on three main criteria:
- The unique story of the town,
- how the town will design a cultural programme for all,
- how the town will then deliver a successful programme if it wins.
The town council will discuss the proposal to enter a bid for Town of Culture at an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday 4 February.
The meeting will take place at 6.30pm at the town council office, Rol House, Long Row, Oakham.
