Oakham Town Centre's streets could receive a £10,000 deep clean as part of mission to rejuvenate the High Street.

This week, Oakham Town Council will decide on a proposal to spend money from the Government's UK shared prosperity fund on a three-week maintenance and clean up session.

All of the main streets in the town's shopping heart including Market Square, Mill Street, High Street, Church Street Gaol Street and Crown Walk would be included, as well as the area near the railway station and the pedestrian area around the church.

If the town council approves the £9,200 spend, the comprehensive scrub would include the removal of all litter in all areas and a clean of all pavements, the cleaning off of flyposting and graffiti, the removal of moss and algae and the cleaning of street names.

The town council is proposing to hire a cleaning vehicle and agency staff to do the work.

It is part of new efforts to rejuvenate the town, which started in December with a meeting with shop owners. The county council has hired consultants to also come up with some new plans.

Liz Leaper, owner of Pollen Floristry on High Street said she thinks the funds could be better spent elsewhere.

She said: "To be honest I don't think it's needed and the money could be spent elsewhere. I think tackling car parking would be a lot better, offering something like free parking on Saturdays. It does sound positive though, that the councils are thinking about what they can do to improve the town."

The town council will meet on Wednesday (Feb 12) to make a decision.
