The campaign group Fight4Rutland is encouraging Rutland residents to engage with the latest – and last – consultation on the county's Local Plan, which has at its heart the St George's Barracks super-development between Edith Weston and North Luffenham.
With just one week to go, the group is seeking to make it easier for people to make a response that complies with the consultation rules.
A spokeswoman for the group said: "This Regulation 19 consultation closes on 6 November. At this stage, it's not enough to write a letter expressing a personal opinion: responses must challenge whether the plan is legal and 'sound' against various official criteria including the National Planning Policy Framework."
"It's not easy for a lay person to do this, so we have prepared some notes to help locals participate."
The notes may be found at fight4rutland.org
Fight4Rutland supports sustainable development in Rutland, with new houses at locations identified in the 2017 draft of the Local Plan, namely Oakham, Uppingham and larger villages across the county. Shortly after the 2017 plan was published, the Ministry of Defence announced its intention to withdraw from St George's Barracks and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rutland County Council to work towards a large-scale development, currently planned at 2,315 houses. "Although the consultation two years ago drew well over 1000 objections to this idea, Rutland County Council is ploughing ahead with plans for a small town in a location within a stone's throw of Rutland Water. "Our worry is that this will be nothing more than a commuter estate for nearby cities. The families in those 2,315 houses will be reliant on cars to get anywhere, our rural roads won't be able to cope and young families will have few facilities on site. A village of 300 or so houses on the brownfield site of the barracks itself would be both sustainable and appropriate", the spokeswoman added. Fight4Rutland will be making its own response to the Regulation 19 consultation and Rutlanders who support the campaign may add their names via the fight4rutland.org website. The consultation closes at 4.15pm on Friday 6 November.
