Police are warning the elderly to be at full alert after an 85-year-old Rutland man was conned out of £5,000 by callous conmen.

The Lyddington pensioner handed over the money after he was contacted on the phone by a bogus police officer. Now local police are urging the community to make sure their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours are aware of the perils of scamming.

DC Neil Jones from Leicestershire Police's Economic Crime Unit, said: "We are aware of a report of fraud whereby an elderly man has been contacted via telephone by someone claiming to be a police officer in London. The victim was asked to withdraw a large sum of money and the caller informed him that a courier will be sent to pick the cash up.

"The cash was collected and then further attempts were made by the suspects to obtain money from the victim but banking staff were able to intervene and prevent any further withdrawals from the branch.

"The incident took place on Thursday, October 24, enquiries into that report are continuing and we would ask people to remain vigilant.

"If you have elderly relatives, neighbours or friends then please speak to them about this – make them aware of the dangers and what they can do to protect themselves.

"We would never ask members of the public to hand over such large quantities of cash in this manner. Genuine callers will also be happy to verify their credentials and will not mind you asking to call them back while you phone their supposed employer to seek assurance.

"If you receive one of these calls end it immediately, wait five minutes to clear the line and call the police, or alternatively, phone from a friend's house or mobile."
