Rutland and Melton MP warns of TikTok security threat
The Rutland and Melton MP has warned users to get rid of TikTok.
Alicia Kearns, the MP for Rutland and Melton, has warned TikTok users to get rid of the short-form video hosting service owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
TikTok is an online platform where users can upload, watch and discover short videos on a device or the web.
Ms Kearns said: "If you look at TikTok, it does just look like dance reels and happy jokes and memes and things like that."
In actuality, however, the MP says that users are giving TikTok their "location, you're giving them your network - so who you're friends with and who you're not - you might be sharing interest with them that you may not want to be public, and the reality is that that information is all going back to ByteDance".
Ms Kearns suggests that by using tech from Chinese companies such as TikTok, users compromise their privacy. This is due to the necessity, for these companies, to sign Article 7 of the National Intelligence Law.
Article 7 of China's National Intelligence Law states that "Any organisation or citizen shall support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work in accordance with the law, and maintain the secrecy of all knowledge of state intelligence work."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for TikTok said that the company "are keen to have a candid conversation with Ms Kearns to clear up any misconceptions" about the platform.
