A special service on 2nd March at Peterborough Cathedral celebrated Rutland's strong identity and sense of community.

At a time when Rutland's future remains uncertain, the cathedral service showed the solidarity and pride that local people have for their area, with representatives from across the county showing up to celebrate all things Rutland.

The service was co-hosted by Richard Cole, High Sheriff of Rutland, and Dr Sarah Furness, Lord Lieutenant of Rutland and special guests in attendance included judges, the mayors of Oakham and Uppingham, previous high sheriffs, council officials and representatives from Rutland Police.

During the service, the Lord Lieutenant thanked Rutland's over 300 voluntary organisations in Rutland, many of which were in attendance in the service. From Rutland's Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, business clubs, Masonic groups and youth organisations like cadets, Scouts and Guiding, Rutland has a huge variety of voluntary organisations that could not be possible without the whole host of amazing volunteers that are the heart and soul of these groups.

Rutland also has a significant serving and veteran military presence within the county, many of which attended the service. The 1st Military Working Dog Regiment was present with two of their incredible working dogs, as well as representatives from the 7th Brigade which are based at Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore.

Bishop of Peterborough Debbie Sellin gave a homily celebrating the unique features of the county, including the incredible rural beauty, conservation and connection to the natural world that Rutland holds, as well as incredible communities, schools and independent businesses.

At the service, the Lord Lieutenant said: "Today's service to celebrate Rutland is a great opportunity to appreciate this wonderful county's rich heritage, sense of identity and strong sense of community, supported by so many organisations and individuals. I hope that Rutland's ceremonial county status is retained whatever happens with local government re-organisation."
