As part of Tyre Safety Month, Rutland County Council Road Safety alongside Rutland Police and Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service will be out talking to drivers about the importance of tyres.

The partners will be attending Oakham market on the morning of Wednesday 26 October and at Tescos in Oakham from 1pm.

This year's Tyre Safety Month, which runs throughout October, asks the question 'If your tyres don't stop you, what will?'

The message aims to remind motorists of the benefits and importance of tyre checks but also carries the literal message that, as the only point of contact between the road and the vehicle, the tyres are crucial for safe and effective braking and cornering.

Rutland County Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Highways and Transport, Cllr Rosemary Powell, said: "Tyres are all too often overlooked even though they may be the decisive factor in whether a collision can be avoided or not. With the colder weather upon us, which soon could affect our road conditions, now is the time to ensure that your tyres are maintained. We hope that residents will take the opportunity to come along to meet our team and discuss the issue of tyre safety with them."

Paul Kear, Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant, said: "Tyre condition and tread depth is of the utmost importance from a safety perspective. Please conduct regular checks of your tyres throughout the year as it may save a life. Just because they have passed an MOT doesn't mean they'll be roadworthy after further wear a number of months down the line."

TyreSafe, the UK's charity dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres, has developed an 'impactful' suite of resources, all of which incorporate the powerful acronym 'ACT – air pressure, condition, tread.'
