Rutland Lions marks 50th Anniversary with special celebration

The Lions Club of Rutland marked the organisations 50th anniversary with a special event at Greetham Valley Golf Club.
74 people attended the celebration, including Peter Hems and Peter Jones who were there at the club's inception half a century ago. Both Peter's were presented with certificates to mark the club's appreciation. When the Lions was set up in Rutland, Rutland Water reservoir was not yet complete, and the club has witnessed great change and growth in the county over the years.

Reflecting on the last 50 years, Peter Hems said: "When I joined the Lions, I dreamt of being presented with a green jacket, like at the Masters in Augusta but I soon realised this wasn't going to happen.
"Fifty years is a very long time by anyone's standards, and we are now part of the fabric of the community.

"We wanted to be proactive locally and make a difference. Our first public event was running the tombola stall at the Rutland Show."
The club was pleased to welcome honoured guests to the event, hosted by outgoing president Paul Mills. The High Sheriff of Rutland and his wife Beth; Zone Chair David Houghton and his wife Christine; District Governor Stuart Young; and District Governor Elect Susan Wilding.
When asked what his three highlights were during his presidency Paul said, "I enjoyed and felt it was important to be involved in supplying catering equipment for the re-establishment of the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club at the Grainstore. It helps veterans to find ex-forces friends to share experiences with and obtain support."
"A big event, literally, was moving the club's two huge shipping containers to a new site… and then giving them two coats of paint to match the building they are stored behind. It was hard work but there was a feeling of camaraderie."
His third highlight is the provision of the annual summer BBQ for the Rotaract Family Support Group, usually held at Hilltop Farm, Launde Abbey. "For the first time in many years I will miss it as I am away, but it is thoroughly enjoyed by all those that attend. The Lions supply the food free of charge and then cook it on site."
"I have been proud to serve as President for the last 12 months and would like to thank all the members of the club for their support and wish all the best to incoming president Allan Grey."
