Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has welcomed the establishment of an independent Trade and Agriculture Commission (TAC) to represent farmers, retailers and consumers across the UK.

The commission will be chaired by food safety expert and former chief executive of the Food Standards Agency Tim Smith with consumer groups, retailers and farming unions from across the UK named as members.

The TAC will report directly to the Trade Secretary, advising on trade policies the Government should adopt to secure opportunities for UK farmers, while ensuring the sector remains competitive with animal welfare and environmental standards in food production firmly upheld.

It will also advise on trade policy that identifies and opens up new export opportunities for the UK agricultural industry while protecting consumer interests and those of developing countries.

Rutland and Melton MP, Alicia Kearns, said: "Having lobbied the Government to bolster our agriculture and food production industry I welcome the establishment of this commission which will ensure our high farming, environmental and animal welfare standards are not undermined in future trade deals.

"The East Midlands employs the highest number of people in the UK food and drink industry and this commission will help people around the world enjoy our wonderful food and drink as we become an independent trading nation."

Alicia Kearns MP continues to work on her election commitment to 'Stand Up For Farmers' and work with Rutland and Melton's agriculture industry to support them through the coronavirus pandemic and prepare them for the opportunities ahead.
