Rutland Remembers: Preparations underway for VE Day 80th Anniversary

On 8th May 2025, Rutland will be marking the 80th Anniversary of VE Day across the county, with ceremonies, live music and beacon lightings to mark the occasion.
At Oakham Castle from 9.50am, with the ceremony to start at 10am, a flag raising ceremony will take place, where those gathered will hear the National Proclamation, speeches and see the special VE Day 80th Anniversary flag raised.
That evening in Oakham, a beacon will be lit at 9.30pm in Cutt's Close Park, Oakham. This will be sequences with hundreds of beacons being lit across the country. Arrive early to the park to enjoy Morris dancing, food and other live entertainment.

There will also be a ceremony and beacon lighting taking place in Uppingham with the VE Day proclamation taking place in Market Place at 9am on 8th May, followed by live music on Tod's Piece from 8.45pm and the beacon lighting at 9.30pm.
Furthermore, 'Rutland Remembers: Our 80th Anniversary Celebration of VE and VJ Day' will take place on Sunday 29th June in Oakham. This will include a parade at 10am, church service at 10.30am, and a party in the park from midday. You can expect live music, dancers, food, a beer tent, local stalls, children's fun fair and a flypast by the RAF. Add this date to your diary – we will publish more details nearer the time.
