A council has removed 17 road signs marking the boundary of a county after several were reported missing.

Following a series of roadside checks and a "full audit" by Rutland County Council's highways team, it was discovered that 10 Rutland county road signs had been "removed without permission", prompting the council to take down a further 17 as a precaution.

According to the council, the signs will remain in storage while officials "assess options for their replacement or reinstatement".

Rutland County Council was first alerted to the missing signs in late July, after their absence was discovered on the roads from Braunston to Knossington, Braunston to Withcote and Knossington to Oakham.

A police investigation is underway, but no arrests have yet been made.
