Plans have been approved for 69 new high-tech speed cameras across Rutland.

Plans for an additional 69 speed cameras right across Rutland will cost an extra £80,100 on top of the £350,000 they were originally costed at.

That was the proposal put to members of the cabinet of Rutland County Council at their meeting yesterday, Tuesday 12 September.

Lib Dem Cllr Christine Wise, said: "The previous cabinet approved the procurement and installation of these cameras as far back as December 2021, but there was a delay in getting these at that time and we now come back to the matter, but with an increase in price.

"That said, these are upgraded 'SID's – Speed Indication Devices – replacing all of the existing cameras that we currently have in Rutland, with new high-tech ones, offering clearer messaging and with the additional facility of speed data logging equipment contained within them.

"Since approval for these was given, there has been a significant increase in materials costs and the resulting increase amounts to £80,100. If we do not replace the existing SIDs, they will continue to fail, and the cost the council additional funding to keep them going."

All 23 currently non-functioning SIDs would be replaced with immediate effect in 2023/24, followed by 23 more in 2024/25, and a further 23 in 2025/26. These only include the cameras owned by Rutland County Council, and not those purchased and maintained by parish councils.

Members Unanimously approved the additional funding for the improved 69 SIDs across Rutland.
