Rutlanders gather to celebrate church's 400-year-history

Rutlanders gathered in Ryhall on 3 October to mark the 400th anniversary of the church's three historic bells.
Held in the medieval, Grade I listed church, 'Ringing through the Centuries' invited local people to join the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland to discover how crafts, stories and village life all connect with the bells - there was even a bell shaped cake.
The historic bells were cast at the Tobias Norris Foundry in Stamford, which is now The Tobie Norris pub. The foundry opened in the early 1600s by Tobias Norris at the age of 17 and three generations of the Norris family worked making bells until 1689.
Bells made by the Norris family were often marked with a distinctive backward 'N', which can be seen on the three historic bells at St John's Church.
The bells combine Rutland's local history and one of Stamford's best-known historic buildings.
Over 80 visitors joined the celebration, taking the opportunity to learn about the church's past, try their hand at bell ringing and enjoy a guided visit to the belltower ringing chamber.
