A 13-year-old boy currently awaiting an organ transplant will host a coffee morning in Oakham this Saturday (June 10) as part of his fundraising mission.

Charlie was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) aged eight, a condition which caused his kidneys to stop working aged 11.

Now in renal failure, he has been on the NHS transplant list for over 18 months during which time he has to take a range of medication and have dialysis for more than 10 hours every single day, just to stay alive.

But in 2023 Charlie has also committed to a major fundraising project for Kidney Research UK, as he aims to walk and cycle the equivalent distance of Lands End to John O'Groats.

So far he has raised over £4,000 through his JustGiving page and will be hosting a fundraising morning at Oakham Congregational Church between 10am and 12noon on Saturday.

As well as coffee and cake, there will be a raffle - all in aid of Kidney Research UK.

On his JustGiving page Charlie wrote: "Kidney Research UK allowed me to talk to some researchers about the work they are carrying out.

"The research going on behind the scenes is incredible and will allow a better quality of life for people living with kidney disease.

"I spoke to one researcher and she told me there are a lot of inequalities in treatment for paediatric Kidney disease. I would like to see more funding for paediatric research because I don't want any other children to have to go through what I am going through."

He said he always tries to stay positive and wants to "maximise fundraising opportunities" in 2023.
