Suspicious direct debits trigger investigation into Oakham Town Council finances
By Seth Walton - Local Democracy Reporter 22nd Oct 2026
Members of a town council will discuss suspicious banking activity at their next meeting.
Concerns were recently raised after unauthorised direct debit transactions appeared on the statements of an Oakham Town Council bank account.
The council has contacted Lloyds, with whom it holds its current account, to resolve the matter.
An investigation is underway.
The suspicious activity marks the latest in a series of complications involving Oakham Town Council accounts.
Earlier this year a forensic audit was ordered following allegations of payroll fraud.
As previously reported, it was alleged that council staff had received duplicate payments while another allegation involved a £10,000 overpayment to a contractor.
An internal audit signed in June covering the financial year ending March 31 2026 found the council had failed to "maintain an adequate system of internal control including measures designed to prevent and detect fraud and corruption".
The financial committee meeting will be held in the council's chambers on Long Row, Oakham, at 7pm on Wednesday October 28.
