After the roaring success of the inaugural sale last year, the Tolethorpe Clothing Sale is back by popular demand. On Sunday 29 October 2023, Tolethorpe Hall will host its second clothing sale.

Featuring local people and traders selling preloved, vintage and costume clothing and accessories galore, there is something fro everyone, from the theatrical to the every-day shopper!

A collaborative event developed by and for the community, Tolethorpe Clothing Sale features mainly womenswear with some menswear. Across 40 stalls, shoppers can expect a wide variety of preloved clothing, shoes, hats, jewellery and accessories, from high end to high street.

Whether vintage, retro or nearly new, the one rule is that everything is pre-owned. There will also be a treasure trove of items available to buy from the Stamford Shakespeare Company costume and fabrics department, based at the historic venue.

At the pilot event last November, a queue of eager shoppers formed one hour before doors opened and the hall was filled with a steady flow of shoppers throughout the day. This year the car parking team will be expanding to meet the demand.

A local seller, Charlotte from Oakham, said: "The venue was exceptional, with so much on offer, and the amount of buyers was phenomenal.

We met some wonderful fashion enthusiasts, sold out most of our stock and had so much fun to boot. We can't wait for the next event."

One shopper, Anna from Ryhall, said: "My daughter, mother-in-law and I had a fabulous afternoon at the clothing sale in Tolethorpe. Lots of unique pieces to be found, and also a yummy sausage roll half way round. We all got something for ourselves and a few presents too. Would love to go again!"

Julia from Uffington added: "I found an absolutely stunning dress I wouldn't have been able to afford as new. I feel fantastic in it, now I can't wait to wear it!"

Miriam Spring Davies, Head of Wardrobe, says, "I've met so many fantastic local sellers and people since I've worked at Stamford Shakespeare Company, all of whom share a love of clothing and style. We have an extraordinary venue here at Tolethorpe Hall, it makes sense to use it and share it."

To help realise her idea for this event, Miriam reached out to Stamford resident and communications consultant Tiffany Arntson, who co-founded the Border Vintage pop-up shops around town.

Tiffany says, "I'm thrilled Miriam invited me to collaborate in this event that reflects how shopping habits are changing. Alongside our fantastic independent shops and initiatives like #ShopStamford, buying and trading preloved is no longer a niche thing. With one person's trash being another person's treasure, it's a fun and affordable way to try different styles. The atmosphere on the day was so fantastic, we can't wait to host again."

With over four rooms of rails and laden tables, there will be plenty of opportunity for local people to browse, try things on in a dedicated changing area and go home with some new-old gems.

Free entry and free parking makes it easy for people to swing by, whether for a quick browse or a more committed forage.

Anyone who is interested in selling their preloved items at the sale can register their interest via email to [email protected].

Shoppers are advised that cash payment is preferred but there is also a card payment station serving all stalls. Stamford caterer The Secret Kitchen will be serving treats and drinks to keep everyone refreshed.

Doors open to the public 10am-4pm and free entry invites everyone into the magic of Tolethorpe Hall.
